Family Link

Each member of staff at St John’s is passionate, about giving every child the very best start on their educational journey. However, no school can operate in isolation from a child’s home input. What your child does at home with you has a greater impact than any other factor. Parents who have taken an interest in school and supported their child through school – the difference at GCSE level is massive.

Ages 4-16y only 15% time spent in school, leaving 85% spent primarily with you and the other significant adults in their lives. That equates to spending only 9mins of very hour in school up to the age of 16 years. So it stands to reason that what happens at home is critically important.

This is where I come in. As Family Link Manager I am here for YOU, to support you throughout the entire time your child is in this school. To bring together the wonderful work the teachers do here at St John’s and the hardest, yet most satisfying and rewarding job of all, that of being a parent.

Working as a partnership, together the school and all it offers and yourselves – this combination of parents, families and teachers is THE most significant factor in achieving at school. As a parent you are a powerful person. How you support your child will have a profound and long lasting effect on their entire life. When parents are involved in their child’s education they enjoy school more, attend regularly, get better academic results and have fewer behavioural problems. Whilst the parent’s involvement has the greatest effect in the early years, the benefits go way beyond academic success. Studies show that children of involved parents have better social skills, are less vulnerable to stress, are more resilient and enjoy better health. They experience greater life chances, better income attainment and have more successful social relationships.

The core message here is – parents, you don’t realise just how important you are!

The best thing you can do for your child is talk, talk, talk – conversation, discussions, questioning, encouraging and read, read, read together. You matter, start early, keep going, just be interested and keep talking.

I am here to help you do just that, by running courses including parenting skills, helping you to help your children at home. Providing support, advice and information on all aspects of parenting and life issues. We also have family learning days for every year group in school, events where you can come into school to join their child in themed activities. We do urge you to participate, wherever possible. I also have a whole host of literature giving information on all aspects of life including child care, raising and feeding children. You can speak to me regarding any changes at home e.g. separation, family issues, bereavement, domestic abuse, debt, moving home etc. etc. Children can be affected and it is better if we know if there are home and family issues that your child may be worried about.

I am always here, please feel free to speak to me in the playground, or call into school and arrange to meet with me if there is anything at all you wish to talk about. I can also point you in the right direction for all local help agencies and local job vacancies. I can help with your CV or job application and liaising with the local police.

Please see below for some of the other services we offer.

Thank you
