Democracy in Action!

As parents and visitors left our Christmas Nativity performances they were asked to contribute to our silver collection. We raised an impressive £440!
As part of our assembly theme this week, we have been learning about inspirational Christians. Today we learnt about Martin Luther-King and the changes he helped to bring in America. We read through one of the prayers he shared with his congregation.

As a result, we learnt about the importance of a democracy and linked this to our own School Council. As the children left assembly, they each placed a counter into a ballot box to decide whether we should donate the money to Marie Curie Cancer Care, Leeds Children’s Hospital or to buy a defibrillator for our school. The counters were counted:

Leeds Children’s Hospital – 84 counters
Defibrillator for school – 123 counters
Marie Curie Cancer Care – 152 counters

Democracy in action!

Here is the prayer we shared in assembly, written by Martin Luther-King himself:

‘God, grant that we take on the struggle with dignity and discipline. May all who suffer in this world reject violence and choose the method that seeks to redeem.

Grant that we will follow you and become so committed to your way and your kingdom that we will be able to establish in our lives and in this world a kingdom of understanding, where men and women will live together respecting the dignity and worth of every human being. In the name and spirit of Jesus. Amen.’
